Would anyone like to share what your plans are for your 5th grade child? Sort of like a simple list of what you plan to teach and which curriculum you use for each subject?

Hi Tenfeet,
This is Ann Marie, I also have a fifth grader, here is what I will be using with her:
Art: Feed My Sheep (How Great Thou Art)
Bible: I Want To Know, Hertiage Builders (Zonderkidz)
Genesis/Exodus
Computer/Typing: Meavis Beacon
Geography: Tied in with History and Missionaries we know.
History: The Story of the World, Volume 1: Ancient History
The Annals of the World (www.masterbooks.net) The Victor Journey through the Bible (www.CookMinistries.com/victor)
Language Arts:
Learning Language Arts Through Literature, Purple Book
Writing Strands 2/3
Spelling: Spelling Workout (Modern Curriculum Press)
Handwriting: Zaner Bloser/ Getty Dubay
(my daughter enjoys the Italic writing, however, after using this last year I chose to change curriculum, because of my second grader needs to learn handwriting to be able to read it- My fifth grader wanted to continue in Italic, so she chose to both)
Communication/Speech: Conversations with Character (Home Sweet Press)
Reading: MCP Word Study
Math: Math-U-See Epsilon
Science: Exploring Creation with Zoology 1 (Apologia Educational Ministries, Inc.)
Home Economics: Pearables
Some other resources I am using:
Hold That Thought! Notebooking
Noah Webster 1828 American Dictionary of the
English Language
Like I posted under the second grader - all the other history resources (some beautiful books, with great illustration) But I will combine Geography, History, Science, Bible, Art, Home Economics, and Speech. I can't wait to hear what you decided to go with - There is so much to choose from!! One thing that also really is helping me (I'm not with an umbrella or an ISP, I file my own affidavit) is Cindy Downes "Checklist" (OklahomaHomeschool.com)
God Bless You!!! Remember (1) You can do all things through Christ who will give you the strength you need each and every day - Don't start any day without asking!! and (2) The first year is the hardest.

Thank you so much Ann Marie. You are very helpful. Have you used Math U See before? If so I have a few questions. I am thinking about using Math U See and Rod and Staff Math.

Tenfeet,
I am so sorry for not getting back to you - I'm still learning how to use these chat areas and did not realize until today I had to go back and click and read...OOPS, Yes, I have been using Math U See for two years and really love it. It is very user friendly, and Math is what really pushed my heart towards homeschooling (and the fact my oldest child 10 prayed for 2 and a half years for me to homeschool her). She was an A+ student in Math, she started third grade loving Math, her favorite subject, then by the end of the year, she hated Math, said it was stupid, etc... So I knew there was something wrong - even though she was the top of her class. So when I started homeschooling her 4th grade, I went back to third grade Math, she went through alot of it quickly, but there were chapters that took us two or three weeks to get through - these were the areas she didn't get and caused her to hate Math. I can proudly say that she like Math, and usually wants to do Math first now! I attribute that to the program - it is a concept mastery program - meaning you not to move on to the next chapter until your child knows the material. Steve Demme the author of the program is a fantastic teacher, I just let my daughters watch the DVD, then they start right in on there Math book. I hardly ever have to help out with Math, which gives me more time for the other subjects like Science and History. I have had friends switch from very expensive programs because they were crying through Math every day to this program and now love it! There website is very comprehensive, has placement tests. Hope this helps!!
God Bless

I have a 5th and 3rd grader this year. Here's what my 5th grader is doing:

Math- Rod and Staff
English- Rod and Staff
Typing- Mavis Beacon
Spelling- Phonetic Zoo

Everything else is covered by a year-long unit study we're doing called "Prepare and Pray." It's based on the original Swiss Family Robinson that still has the Christian content intact. We're learning a lot of wilderness survival skills and are doing a lot of hands-on learning.

There are other volumes by this publisher based on different books, but next year we're planning to start using Tapestry of Grace, and continue through high school with that.
