I was looking at Lifeway's "Bible Teaching for Kids" and wondering if it could be utilized in a daily homeschool setting.

We do not attend Sunday School at our church, but we do attend services each Sunday. There is a "Children's Church" during the service where our children receive some Bible instruction through the program called "KIDMO"

The teachers do send home a "brochure" type paper of activities for KIDMO at HOME but it's just not sitting well with me.

So, what do you think about Bible Teaching for Kids?

I also would like to ask if you have any opinions about the HSBC (??) Chilren's study Bible.

Our church before we moved used to write their weekly kid's church lessons in conjunction with what the pastor was teaching. It was a LOT of work and didn't always come off as polished as a purchased program, but it was wonderful from a homeschooling point of view. We all learned the same thing and could continue the study all week. Just before we moved out of state they started using Kidmo. I was not thrilled. It was very loud and raucous and silly. The kids loved it, though.

I am using materials from Explorer's Bible Study now. It's very advanced, so I have planned the third grader to work the first grade book, etc. It's serious study, though. Not much fluff at all.

Anji, thank you for responding. Our church also uses Kidmo and while we don't attend the Sunday School Kidmo is continued during the regular worship in another room for "Children's Church." I don't ever see much of what goes on for Kidmom, but I've heard other parents say just what you did. Smile

I want to look at the Explorer's Bible Study. My sons really do want a "real" Bible study. They see me doing my LBY study and I've told them how important it is to me and they know to leave me alone unless there is excessive blood! LOL

Thanks again. Oney

Hey Oney and Anji,
This is so cool! People helping each other! I love it!
That's what we want this board to be.
Have you read Cathy Duffy's review of these studies? Might be helpful.
Hey, maybe Beth Moore should write Bible studies. Wouldn't that be fabulous?
Blessings,
Christine

My church has a group called AWANA. It encourages the kids to memorize Bible verses, the books that I purchased also give the kids different activitiesto do. We practice the verses at home so that really helps out with Bible time.
My kids have a great time.

My kids have all been in AWANA at one time or another and we love it! My youngest just finished T & T (Truth & Training, 3rd-6th graders) and earned the Timothy Award. That means she completed all four books for the past four years. This year she even did all the silver & gold (extra credit) sections. She does it completely on her own and she really enjoys it. I'm going to miss AWANA now that my kids are outgrowing it. There are clubs for jr and sr high, but none of the churches in our area offer them.

Hi Gini,
Welcome to the board! Check here often. We're going to be posting some new catgories - hopefully soon!
We've done AWANA on and off too.
Anyone here ever done Scripture Memory Fellowship?
Blessings,
Christine

WOW Lori kudos to your daughter. What an accomplishment. My daughters are still young and not there yet. My girls all three are in T&T now, finishing up the first book. They get so excited everytime they come out of class with a new bubble on their pin.

I picked up Patent/Teacher Handbook: Teaching Younger Children Everything they Need to KNow About the Bible by Dr. Edward Buchanan at our homeschooling conference last week. It looks very good! There are readings and activity sheets (although I don't like the size of them).
Anyone else looked at this?

I would love it if Beth would write some childrens studies. Better yet some that would corrispond with the womens studies where we could all have the same topic but our own work in the word. I personally need something to keep me acoutable daily and I have loved Beth's in depth studies.

We've just always read from the Bible and used a concordance. Right now we're using the Holman Christian Standard. I guess I'm too cheap to buy a study book LOL!
Really though, that's what we do and it works for us well. I'm not talking about just reading Bible stories but really getting into the Word. Some times I pick a character quality that we need to work on and we do a search, or we'll take Pastor's sermon and try to go even deeper. This semister, we're starting at the beginning and reading from Genisis. Yesterday, we began discussing why the Lord would change a name (Abram to Abraham, Sarai to Sarah...) We ended up reading about Paul in the New Test... I love the discussions we get into and even the young ones get involved. We begin right after breakfast and and at times we're still going hours later. We'll even call up Papa, who is a Baptist minister, for his input.

Edited to add:
Another thread made me remember the ATI Character Sketches. THese are good for character qualities. I need to pull these back out and do these again!

Quiver,
Why do we overcomplicate this area so much?

Smile

I really like the AWANA program but our church gave it up in favor of KIDMO, which I don't care for much so we don't participate.

Hi All,
For my boys at home I use Keys for Kids. It is Free and you get one every other month. Both of my boys love it. Both of my boys also go to Sunday School each Sunday morning.

Hello Andrea. My children showed me "Keys for Kids" just last year on the CBH ministries website. They really like it too. They also like to listen to "Down Gilead Lane" and just explore on the CBH site.
Another great resource is the BBNradio website. We can access the BBN Bible Institute and listen to BBN radio, which I highly recommend. There are actual classes you can take for free and further your knowledge of the Bible. I'm currently taking a course on Christian Ethics. My older boys are listening in and learning with me. I think these two websites are wonderful tools for homeschools!

I definitely agree that both sites are terrific for homeschoolers. Thanks for the info on BBN radio. I am going to need to take a closer look. Actually my boys are enjoying Down Gilead Lane also. Another set of stories that my boys have gotten into is the Patch the Pirate series.

Question: These look great, but do you just listen to them off the computer? I'm picturing the family gathered around the laptop ....
I'm totally techno-deficient!

KIDMO is a media-driven, loud & raucous curriculum for elementary aged children. It does teach Biblical truths but who can hear it amidst all the noise and clutter? KIDMO is geared to a generation raised on a steady diet of MTV-type flash. It's NOT what I want for family.

I'm all for having fun but where is this rule that seems to have pervaded our Baptist churches that states children must be entertained constantly? When will we teach them the importance of "Being still...?" Where is the reverence? IMO, we're giving children a false impression of church and true worship. It is not about ME and how I can be entertained but about HIM and giving HIM glory.

I need to get off of my soap box...
