Has anyone ever used the book "How to teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons? If so, did you like it or not.

Dear tenfeet, I am brandnew to homeschooling too, so maybe we will learn together what in the world we have gotten ourselves into! I can't wait to get started. I will be starting my 3 year old with pre-K this fall, and have been asking all sorts of questions.

In regard to the 100 easy lessons, a girlfriend of mine who is homeschooling her 4 children, has used that book on 3 of her kids, and is planning on using it with her 4th this fall. She told me that usually by lesson 30 something, they had a really good grasp of it, and I don't think she took any of her kids all the way through it. Of course all kids are different, so I'm sure many do go all the way through it, and love it. She got me a used copy, and I plan on using it with my girls when they are old enough.

I can't wait to learn with you!! I got the book from the library and I am just not sure about it. I haven't really started it yet. I hope it works it just seems odd to not teach the letters first. My four year old already knows the letters and when i asked her to say MMMMM she said "M". Maybe she will get the hang of it.

Another popular, easy to use book is called Alpha Phonics. Have you heard of it?

Hi again - I am using Phonic Pathways (this was recommended in The Well Trained Mind). I chose it because I was not trained in Phonics and really thought I could not homeschool my youngest - How was I going to teach her how to read??? Anyway, Susan Bauer Wise suggests this program for adults who need phonics - it has worked for my daughter and myself - A friend of mine is using it with her three children (grades 2,5,6) for practice - her 6th grader is still learning how to read - he had tracking problems and just found out 2 years ago - so he is relearning - This book address eye problems like tracking she really liked the book..

I have also used Phonics Pathways. I like it very much. I bought it this year to give my 2nd grader some confidence. After about 2 months with it, he seemed bored (and more confident), so we moved on. I guess he got what he needed from it. My main program is Saxon Phonics, because it is very intensive. Three of my four sons are dyslexic, one severely so, and I wanted a sold phonics program. There are SO many programs, aren't there?

We have used 100EZ for all of our children. We get to lesson 60 then switch to Pathway Readers for the remaining part of the year.

Why we liked it:
No bells, no fuss
Quick and easy
Teaches handwriting, grammar (beginning) and phonics
Relatively little twaddle in the stories.

Ruth Beechick highly recommends "Teach your child to read using story books."

I have used 100 EZ Lessons for 3 of my 5 readers. I have tried to use it with the other two, and it just didn't fit.

I used several different things with one of my boys. I think he did learn most of the basics from 100EZ Ls and just took more practice than the others.

My current K could not remember the letter sounds from day to day. So My Father's World is working with him. It is very slow and gentle. He is learning.

I used 100 Easy lessons for all of my children and was successful in teaching them.
