Has anyone heard of (or used) Winter's Promise, or Notgrass History?
Want to share your thoughts?

We have Notgrass American history (called Exploring America). My son did it last year, and my oldest daughter will use it year after next. My son only did the history portion, but it covers Bible, literature and history, and includes writing assignments (but not writing instruction). I like it, and my son learned a lot. I plan on having my daughters do the full curriculum when they're ready for it (probably in 11th grade).

I've heard of them but haven't used them. Winter's Promise is fairly new, so there probably aren't a lot of people who use it. I read about Notgrass quite often at the Well-Trained Mind boards.

Hi, Is anyone familiar with Communicators for Christ? It is a speech program that can be used by 7+ year olds? Thanks for your help...

Christine,
I guess I never answered you about Notgrass. We haven't used it in over a year and it isn't on next year's list, so it's packed away at the moment. I'll pull it out later this week when I'm sorting thru things and get back to you then. Do you have any specific things you want to know, or just a general overview?

I am very new. Did anyone ever answer the questions Christine had about Notgrass and the communications for Christ?

Christine,
I'm finally getting around to answering you about Notgrass history. I said it would be "next week" and it ended up being "next month". Sorry!

Exploring America consists of two volumes, each volume has 15 units of 5 lessons each. So all together you have 150 daily lessons. It says in the Introduction: "To complete one credit in American history, one credit in English, and one credit in Bible, the student must read the text and complete the assignments for each of the 150 lessons. Assignments include a weekly writing project, a weekly Bible study, and readings in leterature and original documents and speeches."

The estimated time needed to complete the assignments is 2-3 hours per day. It includes assignments in composition and research which you can choose from (the student isn't expected to do all of them). There is a separate volume that has lesson reviews, quizzes and tests, but I don't have that one. I plan to buy it before my daughter uses this in another year. I don't know if it was available when the curriculum first came out or not, but I didn't know about it anyway. Beginning with Unit 3 there are also literature assignments for the student to read. Most of the books take about 2 weeks to read. I've heard that some people use study guides, like Progeny Press, to go along with the literature that is assigned, but I don't plan to do that (probably, may change my mind). The 5th lesson of each unit is a Bible study. There's also a memory verse for each unit. I personally don't think the Bible lessons in this curriculum are enough for a full credit in Bible if that was all they did, but added to other Bible study/church participation that my kids do, I would include these assignments and give them a full credit.

I'm not really sure what else you wanted to know. Let me know if you have specific questions. I'll keep these books where I can get to them now so hopefully it won't take me a month to answer you next time. Smile
