My church is going on a mission trip to Quebec where we will be teaching English through a VBS program for a week for children. We will have to hugely simplify a curriculum so there are only one or two concepts and verses for the whole week. I saw that the outfitters 2008 curriculum had a version for children with special needs. I think it might work if it is simplified and has activities that focus on comprehension. Does anyone have any input on why this would or wouldn't work? Does anyone know much about the special needs curriculum? thanks!

The special needs material is really designed for kids who have a learning problem and need more one on one help. It's also designed to work with the regular rotations as part of VBS. I'm not sure if it would meet your needs or not. The material is a little more simplified, but I'm not sure it wouldn't be boring for kids who have no problems learning on their grade level. I wish I could be more helpful to you. I will say this, don't be as concerned about the language barrier, God will take care of that. You may be using the material to teach english, but ultimately the goal is to share Christ, not just have them learn English. Also, music is one of the best ways to communicate a new language. I'll never forget how much music we used in foreign languague classes in high school. I have many friends who are missionaries and they have all told me the same thing, music helped them communicate in ways that words could not on the field, so make sure your music leaders are well prepared. I'll be praying for you, and all the others who are taking VBS to the mission field! God bless you, and may you have an opportunity to show His love in new and exciting ways!
