I just ended a conversation with an unchurched grandma who told me about her unchurched granddaughter's reluctance to attend our VBS which is being held this week. Since our public school pays children to attend summer school, the granddaughter took issue with the word "school" - too much school in one day! And later she also wondered why children would want to learn more about the Bible?
So - maybe we need to rethink what we call this week since our target audience is our unchurched neighbors. (Our church was planted in a housing addition.)
Do you have a suggestion or perhaps your church uses an alternative name with neither of the words "Bible" or "school"?
We found that with 12 month schools, the "vacation" part did not fit! We also found that when using VBS, not many knew what we were referring to. So as an offshoot of last year's theme, we came up with "Character Camp". It seems that all parents want their children to learn good character traits and no matter what the theme those traits will be part of the studies!
