This is my first post, although I've been reading the responses off and on for awhile. My husband and I were planning to homeschool our children when they got school age (our oldest just turned 4), but now our son has been diagnosed as delayed and we agreed to put him in the dd preschool through our school district. We were told that we were not locked into anything, that we could pull him out at any time. (I didn't mention that we were considering homeschooling). I know that many of you are successfully homeschooling your SPED/other special needs children. When you pulled your child out of public school, did the district try to make it difficult? Did they ask you to agree to regular testing or other stipulations? Do you have to follow their IEP?

Thanks.

I think everything depends on the laws in your state in regards to homeschooling.

We didn't get to an IEP with my daughter because they gave us such a hard time about scheduling it. She wasn't diagnosed yet, with Asperger's but with all the hard time they gave us through the year I didn't want to bother with them.

I'd go to the hslda's website and click on homeschooling laws - hslda.org . You don't have to be a member to look around their site so it's free info for you. You may not even have to tell the school district you are homeschooling! I would even recommend joining the HSLDA just in case they do give you a hard time, once you make the final decision and pull him out.

There is a lot of info out there about children with special needs and homeschooling. Just google his diagnosis and see what you come up with. Smile

Hi Ladies,
You have a constitutional right to homeschool, whether your child is special needs or not. Sometimes when children are removed from the public school there is some subtle pressure exerted to keep them enrolled. Just remember you're free to remove them and teach them at home.
Blessings,
Christine
