Have you studied different learning styles? What modifications have you made to your teaching based on your child's learning style?

I haven't studied them necessarily, but I have read about learning styles and find it very interesting. The biggest change I've made has been allowing my kids to follow their own learning style. That was hard for me, especially for the ones that are different than mine (which is half of my kids). It took me a while, but I finally got used to letting my kids read a book while lounging upside down on the couch, or do school work while listening to music, or whatever other things worked for them that would not work for me. I will admit, it's much easier for me to teach my two who have a similar learning style as I do, but I've learned a lot from the other two also.

There's a free online tutorial about multisensory teaching which includes a lot of information about learning styles at:
http://www.learningabledkids.com/multi_sensory_training/ Hope that helps! |

Hi Christine (GOOD to see you too!), and "HI" to all, Yes.. The website is available to help parents homeschooling children with learning difficulties. My hope is that the site will help parents find the information, curricula, and special resources they need to teach their learning abled kids at home. I always hated kids being labeled as learning 'disabled', because they CAN learn! My kids have difficulties with dyslexia, dysgraphia, executive dysfunction, and ADHD. Prior to starting to homeschool, I was trained as a special education advocate for the public school system, went and got trained in Orton-Gillingham methodologies for teaching children with dyslexia to read, and started my Master's degree in Instructional Design. I have since finished my master's degree, and have been homeschooling for several years. The www.LearningAbledKids.com website is my "brain dump" of much of what I know or have learned through my advocacy and consulting experiences. My hope has been to provide encouragement to homeschooling parents and to provide ready information to make their lives easier. When dealing with the learning difficulties, life is already stressful enough, and the last thing we all need is MORE stress! When I started homeschooling, I felt isolated and like I didn't 'fit in' with many of the typical homeschoolers because of the learning struggles we were dealing with, so I started the www.LearningAbledKids.com yahoo group. The group has grown to 800+ members and is a fabulous community of positively focused members who look at the "can dos" and "here's what worked for us". SO, I always hope the group feels like "home" where the moms can relax, share, vent, seek help, ideas, and solutions, without feeling like anyone is judging them or their child. SO, that's a bit more about the website, me, and the group. Thanks so much for asking! (Sorry I haven't checked back in many days--we had two deaths in the family one week ago--still dealing with a lot of that, but today I felt compelled to log in and visit here a bit after my Beth Moore Bible study). Many Blessings to all, Sandy This message has been edited. Last edited by: SandyKC, |
