Help! I need some ideas for how you all limit the time your kids spend in front of the TV or computer. We've got to tame this monster!

Blessings,
Christine

Well, lately, we haven't (limited the time, that is) and I'm seeing some negative effects from that. When they were younger we would occasionally have "no TV" weeks. Usually it was one week at a time, but maybe two, when we just didn't watch any TV at all. The first couple of days were awful (withdrawals!) but after that they found other things to do, and often when the TV was allowed back on, they didn't want to watch it as much because they were having too much fun doing other things. Other times we would just limit the hours it could be on, like only after school or only when Dad is home (my personal favorite). I really think I need to do something like that again, including computer time in it as well. Thanks for the reminder!! (and it's good to "see" you again, Christine -- I've missed you!)

We have two teens. We usually don't watch during the week. We have screen time on the weekend. But if they did not work well that week, they will lose screen time.
I would suggest looking at when it would be a serving as a disruption in your school day.
When is it a disruption from quality family time?
Maybe starting there. My kids are used to not watching during the week...and really, we don't watch alot on the weekends. We either have activities going on or we play games together.

My kids are younger, ages 9,6,4 and 2. The three oldest ones do chores to earn tickets which they can spend on their screen time. They get one free "learning game" on the computer each day for 30 minutes, after that whatever they do they have to pay a ticket. This really limits how much they want to spend on Tv or computer because they can also turn in their tickets for money to spend on stuff they want. The oldest is saving her tickets for a sewing machine.
