New topic! Do you have the support of your family? If you don't, how do you handle the conflicts?

Both sets of grandparents seem a little hesitant. They aren't very negative about it, but they still seem like they're just waiting to see if we stick to it.

My mother-in-law always makes teasing comments, but I don't think she means them as "disapproval." For example, one day our 2nd grader was trying to tell her the time and she mixed up the hands (ps- don't tell my mother-in-law, but I do that sometimes too! Eek) and she said something like, "Who is your teacher? What school do you go to? You might want to tell your teacher to work on that!"

And, my mom is always hinting at what other kids in different school settings are doing. And she'll throw in the "can your kids do that?" remarks.

Don't you wish you could say, "Yes, and they're smoking pot and having sex at school too. Should we be jealous of that?"
But, you can't say that, and you probably shouldn't say that.
When I was in law school we learned a doctrine called res ispa loquitor. It means "the thing speaks for itself." Give your relatives some time. When they see the character in your kids, the thing will speak for itself.
Blessings,
Christine

I definitely have my entire family against me. They tell me I am quitting on my 2 boys. They all talk about the lack of socialization, they have too many problems for me to deal with. My family refuses to help with anything to do with homeschooling. All of them are quite upset because they realize I am using a christain curriculum. Nobody in my family except my boys and I are christains. I think this is making things more difficult for me also.

Dear Andrea,
It will be especially important for you to get some support SOMEWHERE! Have you found some support groups in your area? You can go to www.hslda.org, click on your state and locate groups that can put you in touch with groups in your area.
Promise me you'll seek out some like-minded moms in your area!

Christine,
Yes, I have found support groups in my area that have been very helpful. I feel that without their support I might have given up.

I do now but it wasn't always that way.
I finally learned to get my MIL and my mom in on the act by getting them to help teach. Now, they are so very happy about homeschool. My mother, A clinical dietician with a speciality in feeding disorders, has decided to write curriculum for multiple age teaching. I get to be her "beta tester"
MIL hated it at first and was very vocal about it. She was a ps teacher for 25 years in the same school I attended; maybe she remembers me as a student! LOL!! Now she loves coming over and helping the one who has trouble reading and reading history to the older ones. She is also teaching my daughters how to sew. She feels like she is making a difference and she is! This is sometimes very difficult on me as MIL has very definate opinions about how I should conduct my school but she is softening. It's only taken her 13 years!

Hi Quiver,
You have handled her very wisely, I'm sure. Won her over by your gentle spirit and example. Good for you!

Christine,
I finally have one person on my side. My husband now is all happy about me homeschooling. My mom seems to be coming around somewhat also.

Hi Andrea,
I am rejoicing for you! May your husband and other family members continue to see fruit in what you're doing, and thereby be won over!
Blessings,
Christine

Andrea,
Once my Husband was 100% behind homeschooling, handling everyone else was "easy," comparatively speaking...

ACK! I lost my post.
Here's a quick rundown...
*Find other homeschooling moms of like mind.
*Pray for your husband, for his heart to be softened and turned to his children (Malachi 4:6)
" Pray for yourself. Guard your heart "for out of it spring the issues of life."
* Ask God to put on your spiritual armor. You are going into battle.
*Pray for any antagonist in your life (heap on those burning coals!)
*Read God's Word. Let Him speak to you through His Word
*When you don't know what to pray, pray Scripture. Psalm 67, 62, 61... Isaiah 54:13...
I actually wrote that last verse on the wall around my celing in the room where I keep my school supplies.

Prayer changes things!

"Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much." James 5:16

Augh! I can't think anymore.

I posted earlier that my husband was supporting my decision to home school now he is set against me again. He came home early and found me doing our daily devotions and got very angry and told me to put our boys back in school. I want to listen to him as a wife but when I pray to God I really believe jhe is telling me to continue to home school. I also now have our sons doctors telling me to put them back in ps. When I told them no they called DCF on me. Thankfully HSLDA stood by me but it is getting very difficult for me to stay strong. Your prayers and support are greatly appreciated.

Hi Andrea and Mommie!
Welcome, Mommie. Ditto to what Quiver said - tell us about yourself!
Andrea, your doctor called DCF? Yikes! Why? What happened?
These stories are a clear reminder that we need to pray for one another daily!
