I know 100% that I'm homeschooling my 5 year old dd. I homeschooled her brother through 1st and 2nd grades but had to place him back in public school when dh and I had some marital issues a few years ago. Ds is brilliant but has had a rough time in school due to his lack of organizational skills. I have tried over and over again to teach him how to be organized but he just would never get it. I'd explain the method and he'd proceed to not bother with it, claiming he had a better method...clearly, his ways never worked. His teacher was at her witts end with him because she hated having to give him bad grades when she new that he knew the material! Because of his lack of organization he would lose homework, not do homework, etc. It was a mess!
Thank God this is the last day of school.
Dh has given me free reign and said if I want to homeschool him again next year that I could. I'm seriously considering it. But I am worried that I won't be able to give him the skills he will need in highschool. (He's going into the 6th grade next year.) I am not sure I'm up for the challenge.
Please keep me/us, in your prayers over this as I seek to know what is best for my son.

Dear Barbara,
What a blessing to be able to homeschool him again!
Is he a real right-brained kid? By that I mean is he really creative, sees things differently than others do? Maybe his organizational ideas are just different from yours. Ask him how he would like to organize things - let him have a say in how it's done - then help him set up some systems that make sense for HIM. Your job then would be to make sure he follows through on his own system.
I have a daughter much like this and she responded well to color. Folders and notebooks were color coordinated with each subject. We used colored index cards for memory stuff. Something will click for this child! Keep seeking his input because the more "invested" he is, the more likely he will follow through.
God bless!
Christine

Thanks for your support Christine. After much prayer and consideration I have decided to send him on to PS again next year. I am glad that I will be homeschooling his little sister though. I honestly don't think public school would be a good fit for her. Ds on the other hand, loves PS and I am optimistic now that he will figure it out in the sixth grade.
