I just watch the music demonstrations and on the ABC song the kids can act like they are playing ukuleles. (I love that song!) Any ideas on how to make some? Buying would be to expensive.
When we attended our state early bird preview, we learned the Wiki Wiki song and made ukuleles to use. We took large red disposable plates (hefty interlocking) and in the center of the plate we glued a circle of cardstock paper (about 3in diameter) then drew a circle with a black sharpie in the center of the cardstock and from the circle drew lines for the strings (across the cardstock to the edge of the plate). To the back we taped a paint stick (the ones you get to stir the paint with) for the neck of the ukulele. Then for a "strap" we tied a string of yarn to the paint stick and then taped it to the opposite side of the plate (on the back). You could also use velcro dots to attach it to the plate. These were easy to make and fun to use!

check out the new 2008 Guildcraft arts & crafts catalog! Just got mine in the mail last week and it is full of really cool VBS crafts for Outrigger Island including a great cardboard ukulele.

At our State clinic they showed us some ukuleles they had made. They were red plastic plates with a paint stirrer taped on. The 'hole' in the uke was a circle of sandpaper glued to the center of the plate.
I saw the picture of the cardboard ukulele and my first thought was why not use small kleenex boxes and rubber bands. A paint stir sick could be taped on. It could be covered with contact paper or construction paper. Of course, for a large group this would require getting the whole church involved in collecting the boxes!

we are making ukuleles with 2 desert size paper plates, a paint stick and rubber bands. I'm not exactly sure what they will end up looking like because my crafts leader made them.
You can also take a long puffs or off brand kleenex box-cut a hole in the side enough to poke a paper towel holder thru. We are spray painting them fun kid colors, put 2 rubber bands on them We are going to let the kids deorate them.
We used the clip art from the decorating disc, enlarged it to fit 8"x14" paper and printed them out on a color printer. We then pasted them on card stock or poster board and cut them out. They are more realistic and will not break as easy as the paper plate ones.
I am also curious as how to make Ukuleles for all the kids that will be participating in the musical ... approx. 70. I've read the previouse posts and was wondering if anyone can post PICTURES of the Ukeleles that you've made or someone else has made so I can have a visual for better preperation. THANKS!!
