It is like a harmonica. Be sure when you tape the craft sticks together, you place the tape as clos to the ends as possible. Also push the paper sliders as far apart as possible. This will help you get the sound.

For leis, I used flower petals from Oriental Trading - 5.95 for 1000 petals - and straws that were cut into 1 inch sections. Just alternate onto a piece of yarn cut to length. Super cheap, easy, and cute.

I'm requesting artificial flower donations from our members. I've also stopped at a few garage sales and picked up a bunch. Don't forget to add straws or pony beads in between the petals to take up space. Also, I used plactic lacing instead of string or yarn. This is much easier for the kids to thread themselves.

I wasn't sure about the surfboard sound machines. Does anyone have any other ideas for "musical" crafts for the upper elementary ages?

Thanks. I saw the ukuleles. I think I'll probably go with them. I was wondering if anyone had actually tried them yet. I still worry about my 4th and 5th graders with this. It's hard covering all ages. Thanks again.

I don't know about a "musical" craft for the upper ages, kpbaker, but there are crafts in the VBX material that are designed for 5th and 6th graders. Some of them are really good! I really don't think that the upper age groups would appreicate a "musical" craft anyway.

Have you thought about letting the older ones make maracas? It would take them two sessions to make and decorate. One of my favorite sites has directions for kids.

Hope this helps. Have a blessed day! Barb
