Anyone here a member of HSLDA? Have you ever had to call them for anything?

Yes, we are members, since 1993. No, we've never had to call them.

Yes, we've been members since about 1996. We've never had to contact them for anything. We live in a very homeschool-friendly part of our state.

I've been a member since 1990. I called them once about a child issue not related directly to homeschooling, and they were terrific to deal with.

I have heard their magazine is really good. Is it just info about court cases, or does it have other stuff?

Hi Christine,
I'm a member, and they have a good website to. They have "Generation Joshua" great political venture for high school. Good magazine, great way to keep up on the legal issues facing and being won for home schoolers. Anyone like myself who files an Private School Affidavit, should definately join. (My two cents Big Grin) God Bless

Hi Ann Marie,
Can you explain Generation Joshua?

I'm not a member because I'm an attorney. (I'm not practicing, so I like to say I'm a recovering attorney Smile In fact I used to take referral calls for them. I'd like to get the magazine, though, and I should check on whether I can do that.

You can view the current issue of The Court Report (HSLDA magazine) on their web site, and possibly some back issues, too. I think you can subscribe from there, too, for about $15/yr. You can also sign up for their e-alert service, which sends you e-mail alerts concerning legal issues that effect homeschooling. I thought these were "members only" benefits, but when I looked just now it doesn't say that they are, so you may be able to subscribe without joining.

Hi Christine- The following is from HSLDA.org
about What is Generation Joshua ?
Generation Joshua is designed for Christian Youth between ages 11-19 who want to become a force in the civic and political arenas. Our goal is to ignite a vision in young people to help America return to her Judeo-Christian foundations. We provide students with hands-on opportunities to implement that vision.

In America today, battles are being waged over many issues - from judicial activism to attacks on traditional marriage to the moral disintegration of our socitey. in the midst of the battles, we can lose sight og where our nation has come from, and these pressing concerns could crush our hope for America's future.

John Winthrop, then governor of Mass. Bay Colony, wrote in 1630 concerning New England and AMerica: "We shall be as a City upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us." He warned that "if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause him to withdraw this prsent help from us, we shall be made a story and byword throughout the world."
Generation Joshua wants America to be a perpetual city on a hill. We seek to inspire every one of our members with the kind of faith that sees beyond our present circumstances to what America can become-if each one of us consistently impacts our sphere of influence for Christ and for His glory.

Ann Marie,
Are your kids involved in Generation Joshua? What kinds of things do they do?
Thanks,
Christine

I haven't become a member yet since i won't start schooling until July but it is a definite decision to join. we live in a middle class neighborhood and some of the neighbors are elderly so i'm thinking it might be better to join instead of risk not and facing a nightmare.

I just renewed our HSLDA membership for the last time. They offered a 5-year membership, and they give a discount for military, both active duty and retirees (my hubby retired from the Air Force in '97). I didn't know about the discount, so I don't know if I just missed it before or if that is something new. Anyway, the 5 years takes us up to when my youngest graduates high school so I won't be renewing with them anymore after this. THAT was a strange feeling! When I realized I was joining (renewing) something that would last until I was finished homeschooling -- WOW! It's one of those things I guess I thought would never happen, and now it's only 5 years away.

We've been members for several years, even though we homeschool overseas. I've not needed their help, but want to be a member for the times that we homeschool in the States. I enjoy getting their email updates and try to keep up with what is going on in homeschooling from the legal standpoint.

Pardon the newbie while I bump old topics up to the top:

We have only been HSLDA members since 2006, but we're good through 2009. I haven't needed them yet, but they are a wonderful resource for lots of things.

Christine: If you're interested, I'd be happy to send you my back issues of HSLDA mag...March 2006 thru Oct 2007. I have 7 for sure...I'm sure the 8th one is around here somewhere.
