What have you found to be the most difficult subject to cover in high school? How have you handled it?

For me that would probably be science, especially the labs. We have a homeschool co-op here so my high schoolers are taking science labs there. That is a big help! Foreign Languages are also challenging. They take Latin at co-op, we have Spanish on Rosetta Stone CDs, and we're learning Sign Language together for now but my oldest daughter is hoping to take an ASL class next year (not sure where yet, though).

Anyone here take their sciences at the community college?

We did labs with two other families, so we only had 1/3 of the ick at our house!

Our most troubling subject with my first student was math, but once Mom learned algebra it went much better!

My current high schooler doesn't really have a challenging subject unless it's finding new material to read.

To God alone be the glory,

Is anyone else having FUN re-learning algebra and geometry? I didn't care much for it the first time around (I got a D in Geometry - gasp!), but now I'm having fun with it!
Crazy?

Oh, I agree! It's definitely more fun now. I'm learning things right along with my daughter (trying to keep up with her would be more accurate) and now I love it! I haven't tackled Geometry yet (that is, I haven't learned it again yet) but that's coming. My son took it, but he's more of an independent learner so I didn't learn it along with him. But when my oldest daughter gets there it will be a different story. She wants me right there by her side! But that's okay, I learn more that way, too.

I was an English major, light on the math and science, so when we hit high school, those (and a foreign language)began to be problems with me. We got through Earth Science and Algebra 1, but my husband and I decided to go with our curriculum's dvd program for those 3 subjects this year, and it has been fantastic! In Biology, they show you the dissection on the screen up-close first, then you do your dissecting, so you know what you're looking for. I highly recommend using Bob Jones curriculum dvds for higher subjects.

Hi mrosemartin,
Welcome again! Glad to "see" you here!
I didn't know you could get BJU videos for individual subjects. I thought it was the whole grade or nothin'.
Do you have a website for them? Don't you find that they still need help, though?
Let us hear from you!

Hi! You can order individual subjects, but they cost $300 each. I wanted 3 (Spanish, Geometry, and Biology), so as I remember, it was cheaper to order all the subjects (which included history, English, Literature, and Bible.) You can go online to Bob Jones University, or order a catalog. I'm sure you can get the phone number online. Anyway, I prefer the dvd's to satellite, as you can do the dvd's whenever, but the satellite you have to do when it's on, or tape it. The only difference is that the satellite is live, while the dvd's are 1-3 years old.

Oh, as to the student needing help, yes, they do sometimes. I usually sit and watch the dvd's with them; then I know exactly what they learned and what homework is expected, etc. But the program also includes a year's calendar with all the teacher's assignments on it. And it includes all books (teacher's guide and student text, plus all other supplementals except lab supplies.)
