I have two of four leaving the nest this year. Two will finish high school in June. Of course, we have tremendously mixed feelings about this. They are 16 and 17.
Have any of you delayed high school graduation, or had your kids take a gap year to mature? How did it go? What did they do? Blessings Christine |

Not before graduation, but my son is taking a year off before going to college. He graduated in June '06 but won't start college until this fall (maybe). Part of that was because we moved, but part of it was also because he just needed a break from school. He really was not ready for college last fall and I think the break has been good for him. He's spending the year working, and since we moved he's trying to get involved in a new church and make new friends. Had we not moved I think he'd have spent more time with his friends (before some of them left for college), working and saving money, and volunteering thru his church. I think all of my girls will be 18 before they graduate, or at least very close to it, but if I had one graduating at 16 I think I would definitely have them either stretch things out in high school to graduate later, or wait a year before heading off to college, or at least go to a community college near home. I wouldn't want to send my 16-yr-old off to a university. I have known people to do that and it worked great for them, so I guess it's just a personal thing.
