I would like to create an easy craft for kids to make a ukulele which they will use Friday night for the Wiki Wiki song. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I just made some for our VBS. I took manila file folders drew an outline of the body of the ukulele on 1 side of the folder and cut it out of both sides of the folder. I got pait stirrers (free at paint store) and glued it between the 2 body pieces. I took bamboo skewers and cut them ito about 2.5 inch pieces and glued 3 of them to the back side of the stirrer to stick out each side to look like the knobs on a real ukulele that the strings attach to. I colored a brown circle on the front side of the body to look like the hole in the ukulele. I took 3 strips of thin metallic silver ribbon and glued it about 1 inch from the end of the stirrer and strung it all the way to about 2-3 inches from the end of the body to make the strings. I put another piece of the bamboo skewer over the end of the ribbons on the body and cut the sharp ends off of a toothpick to make it the same size as my skewer and glued it beside the skewer just to add to it. They are really cute! Have fun and enjoy! Hint: you could use toothpicks on all of it instead of bamboo skewers, I just happened to have skewers already. I used hot glue on mine, I don't know if another glue would work or not, I haven't tried any other kind.
We took the picture of the ukulee on the Lifeway decorating cd and enlarged it to fit the 11x14 sheet of paper. We made the color copies on the churches copier. We cut them out and spray glued them to cardboard and cut them out with box cutters then we tied twine to them to look like a strap and the kids hung them around their necks and "played" their ukulee while they sang the Wiki Wiki song.
