I am sure others have asked this one, but I need help on Mission Outlook area. Mainly the back drop. I am going to use cardboard and I know what I want on it, just not sure how I am need to arrange it. I know i want a mountain or volcano, ocean, of course, small island with a tiki hut and a palm tree, and a waterfall. What I really need is some pics and ideas of how to do it all. If you have any pics of how you did it or ideas of how you are going to do it, please let me know. You can just email them to me at michelleleigh20@aol.com if you want. Just put VBS Idea as the subject so I don't delete it. Thanks a bunch!
I didn't receive any help from anyone on here. but my mom and I decided to just simple...as simple as I can go at least. I have many other decorations such as palm trees, flowers, skirts, shells, sand,etc... so I am just doing an easy backdrop, like a Blue sheet (had it left from artic edge) and cutting a big cliff out of cardboard and propping it up against the sheet. gonna have a big fake...of course, palm tree in front of the sheet too. I have to decorate the rest from there. when is your VBS? Ours is June 5-7th. we only do three days. I don't know why. I will email you some pics of how I decorated if you want. you can email me at my email above or just reply on here. doesn't matter. Hope this has helped alittle. God Bless!
I have decided on a similar strategy for the backdrop. Light blue sheets with clouds (white spray paint), blue ocean (dark blue spray paint w/silver & white highlights), and a short white picket fence in front. My room is large, so I will probably do some mountains or a valcano scene also. ANY MOUNTAIN OR VALCANO SUGGESTIONS OUT THERE?
Brown butcher paper works great as mountains and I'm sure for a volcano as well. Preferably get the roll kind. Crumble up the paper, the more the better. To make it look more authentic, spray here and there lightly with dark spray paint. Just drape over something like a piano or other furniture and add greenery etc. to gice it the look you want.

I think that I am leaning toward craft paper for the mountains, as well as the lookout scene (rather than a sheet). I like to work with spray paint. Thanks for the tip!
I did the missions rotation training for the state VBS team and I had to find a way to decorate & make it portable. There was usually a stack of chairs or bookshelves in my rooms and I simply covered them with a large piece of fabric that I bought at a fabric store. It was tan. I used different shades of blue plastic table cloths for water falls. They were scrunched up and put on the mountain and then puddled at the bottom. I took artificial fern plants and ramdomly placed them around the fabric & waterfalls. I put some flower lies around the ferns for some color.
I had a 'guard rail' made from three pieces of carpet rolls that I covered with brown paper. I cut a hole in two of the rolls and put the third roll in the holes to make a fence like rail. I put it in front of the water fall. I found some paper that looked like water and put it on project boards and placed them on top of my mountain.
The fabric was the kind used for quilt backs and was five plus yards long by 120 inches wide. It can be used for mountains or as sand as my mom is doing ar her VBS next week.
Hope this helps!

We bought a sheet of styrofoam from Lowes and cut to resemble mountains and then crumbled brown craft paper and covered the styrofoam. We also took some dark brown spray paint and sprayed in random spots for looks. I am building my waterfall out from these mountains. Have a blessed day! Barb
Thanks, everyone. You gave me some great ideas. These message boards are so helpful. I used 3/4" styrofoam board cut into mountain shapes for the base. I crumpled brown craft paper and then glued this to the styrofoam, leaving it quite wrinkled and puffy in places for texture and depth. I then swiped it here and there with brown, black and mossy green acrylic craft paints. Turned out fine. I hot-glued a light blue, cheap, thin shower curtain ($.79) near the top and to the side of a peak for a waterfall. Starting out with a corner, I hot glued it in a few places, leaving folds for the torrents of water. It ended up about 10-12 inches wide at the base. When I hot-glue the mountain to the wall (we have painted concrete block walls that were not harmed last year by hot glue) the rest of the shower curtain will puddle on the floor. I plan to arrange it into a pool at the base of the falls with rocks, greenery, etc. I plan to use different shades of blue plastic tablecloths for the sky (with clouds and birds painted on), and for the ocean (with boats in the distance and waves painted on). My rubber tree and some other plants from home should round out that scene. I'm going to drape my flower pots with a green tablecloth to tie them in to the scene. The rest of the Missions Lookout room will be maps, Bible verses and motto on poster board (could be cut into flip-flop, pineapple, etc. shapes--haven't done those yet). I have some paper lanterns from Dollar Tree, parrots, paper garland from Big Lots to hang from ceiling grid. I've made tissue flowers from instructions on here. They add a lot of color. I'll be using shells, beach ball, sand bucket some way. Have a great VBS.
