try using umbrella stands from people.Stand the torches in the umbrella stand then adjust it.You can then take paper bags that are turned into rocks to dicusize the stand.Hope this helps.God bless you and your VBS. Big Grin

I'm going to use empty milk or water jugs with sand in them. Maybe wet sand.

In decorating for VBS previews, we used sand in buckets, and then bunched a tarp up around the bucket to hold things up.

Just a suggestion- we used a single staple to staple a nylon strap to the wall and then tightened the strap through the top part of the tiki. It didn't hardly show and held pretty well.

I took some scrap carpet tubes and covered them with brown paper lunch bags, like I did my palm tree. Put the tiki torch down in it and stuffed it with scrap paper that come off of other things I was working on, recycle I am trying to use everything I can, no waste. They turned out pretty good and stand on their own. Hope this helps. Good Luck and God Bless

I used the carpet tube idea, but painted them to look like a piece of wood.

we decorated last night. for the tiki torches and went to a local landscaping company and they donated 1/2 gallon buckets that had used. We filled them with plastic liners and then with sand. It worked great! We also took rolls from carpet and made them in to life size palm trees. I took 5 gallon buckets and filled about half way with concrete and stuck a pvc pipe about 4ft high in the bucket then slid the carpets rolls over and stood them up. We have a very high ceiling so they really made the stage look life like!

We used small coffee cans. Stand the torch up in them, then poor concrete in (like quick crete). I don't think you will be able to take the torches out afterwards though.

We used 1/2 gallon milk jugs with some sand in the bottom. On the outside we used green craft paper to make it look like grass. It covered the jugs and looks great.

Several years ago when I needed something to hold up a bunch of bamboo canes, I asked one of the men at the church to make me some stands. The stand is composed of two pieces of board with random holes cut in them. These board are then separated by a block of wood about 4 inches in height. (actually short pieces of left over 2x4 studs) this allowed me to stick the bamboo in the holes and have them stand up stright. Used the stands this year to hold up the Tiki torches.

I purchased sand colored planters and filled them with sand. From the kids POV, it contributed to the tiki torches looking like they were “in the sand.” We used regular sized tiki torches on the sides of the stage and smaller 2’ tiki torches along the front in smaller sand colored planters. We only lit the tiki torches along the side and had a person on each side of the stage with a fire extinguisher for each rally. You might not want to light the torches though—we hold our Worship Rally in a retrofitted gym so there are no carpet issues.
