I made a palapa(thatch covered shade on beaches) I took 2 big cardboard tubes, like a rod shipping tube, or carpet tube, or you could cover a pvc pipe with brown paper. And placed an umbrella inside the tube and covered the umbrella with a grass skirt, I used 1 adult & 1 child skirt. I used a Christmas tree stand to hold the tube up and spread a beach towel over the Christmas tree stand so you couldn't see the stand.
It was real easy to make and I got compliments that it looked good.

We made a Jungle hut for JJ last year out of branches off of our Fan Palm tree from the yard. It was in need of pruning, so we just cut the lowest branches off and laid them on our frame and tied them to the frame with twine. It was easy and free. It took about 15 branches to do this. They have pretty wide frans and overlap nicely. These worked well to create a nice tropical feel. They were green when we cut them down, but within a day or two they had turned the classic tan color of the raffia. Smile

I'm going to use plastic table clothes. Cut them into wide (12 inches)strips (full length of the tableclothes). Then "fringe" the ends, leaving about 2 in. uncut. Then attach the strips to the roof (I'm using cardboard). Mine probably won't be done for another 2 wks. I'll try to post pictures when I'm finished.
