What's the difference between inductive and deductive approaches to studying the Bible. Which would you recommend and why? Any particularly good ones out there? Thanks for sharing!!!!!

I hadn't thought of it but I did a search and came up with this....

Many people distinguish between two basic kinds of argument: inductive and deductive. Induction is usually described as moving from the specific to the general, while deduction begins with the general and ends with the specific; arguments based on experience or observation are best expressed inductively, while arguments based on laws, rules, or other widely accepted principles are best expressed deductively.

As far as bible studies go, I love everything Beth Moore does. Lately though I've begun reading the stories and really getting involved in the lives of the characters. For instance, I assigned my son and his wife to read the first 4 chapters of Matthew and we will all sit down later this week to discuss it. In my reading I realized I had always heard about Mary and the character of this young girl..she was obedient, etc. But I had never heard of Joseph. I began asking, "What kind of man was he?" Well, from what I understand in that he was going to quietly divorce Mary, he was obviously very much in love with her. He was probably a man of honor too. I've been taking the time to ponder these things about him and it's been very fascinating what I'm learning.

I hope you find the study you are looking for and that the definition somehow helped you.

I'm curious to read more on this. I do not know the difference, except to know that there is a difference between inductive and deductive. I think I am a deductive learner naturally.

Doesn't Kay Arthur use the inductive method?

As I understand this...Deductive is that we take the general..say, the ants marching to and fro carrying peices of leaves on their back...and then study they whys and hows. By the time we are through studying them we have learned that they instinctively work together to accomplish a common goal for their community. We know what they eat, what makes them tick, and in some cases, even go in and disect them to see what's inside.

The inductive way is the opposite...we take the disected aunt, put it back together again and just do all the learning backwards until we get to the point where they are marching to and fro.
